Type Locality and Naming

Liupanshan Basin. Yuan Fuli erected the Liupanshan series in 1925. The type locality for the designation is from Huating of Gansu to Guyang of Ningxia. Upward succession of the Sanqiao Fm, Heshangpu Fm, Liwaxia Fm, Madongshan Fm, and Naijiahe Fm.


Lithology and Thickness

The lower part of the group is built up by purple red conglomerate; the middle part purple red and variegated sandstone and conglomerate; and the upper part blue gray and gray green sandstone and mudstone with oil shale and gypsum.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformably on the underlying Proterozoic Qinling Group. Regionally lies unconformably on the underlying Anding Fm and older strata.

Upper contact

Its top marked by purple red mudstone lies unconformably under light red conglomerate of the overlying Paleogene Sikouzi Fm.

Regional extent

The group is extensively distributed in the Liupanshan area of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia basin.
